On Thursday, 8th/21st September 2017, the Patriarchate celebrated the memory of the Nativity of our All-Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. During this feast, the Church commemorates the fact that the Theotokos was given by God as the fruit of the womb of her childless parents, Joachim and Anna, who had been praying fervently for this reason, and were thus granted to become the parents of the Mother of God. On Saturday, 3rd/16th September 2017, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the prayers and blessings of His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos, at St. Demetrios’ chapel next to St. Demetrios’ School, on the occasion of the beginning of the new School year for the School students, with the participation of students and teachers. At noon on 31st August / 13th September 2017, the Heads of Churches of Jerusalem under His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos offered a meal to the delegates of the National Council of the Churches of Christ USA (NCC) at the Note Dame Hotel, by the New Gate.

During lunch, the Heads of Churches briefed the guests on the current situation at the Old City of Jerusalem, which has always been separated in four quarters, the Christian, Judaic, Muslim and Armenian ones, and on the attempts of extreme Israeli settlers to change this Status Quo, as it happens with the illegal contracts of the Jaffa Gate Hotels and the recent unjust decision of the Israeli Court for them. On Monday, 29th August/ 11th September 2017, the Patriarchate celebrated the memory of  the beheading of the Holy and Glorious Forerunner John at his Holy Monastery, located opposite the Church of the Resurrection, at a short distance to the south west, at the Christian district of the Old City of Jerusalem.

On this mournful feast, the Church commemorates the event that Herod the tetrarch sent a soldier to behead prisoner John the Baptist, because he was judged by him, as he had an illegal relationship with Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Herod was holding a birthday symposium in which he had invited lords and magnates. Salome, Herodias daughter danced there, and Herod liked her,  that is why he promised to give her whatever she would ask for, even half of his kingdom. Taking council from her mother, Salome asked the head of John the Baptist on a charger. Herod was sorrowful because he respected John, but for the oath’s sake and his guests he could not do otherwise, and sent the soldier and beheaded the Forerunner and gave his head to Salome, who brought it as a reward at the symposium (Mat. 14:1-12).
